As the whole world watches our economy falter, one must wonder- what does it all mean?
Banks collapsing like weak empires, stocks crumbling, and the dollar collapsing all point at the fall of a hegemon. History shows a strong pattern of collapsing empires due to the dissolution of economies. Britain and the USSR are just a couple examples of a world power ending its reign due to economic instability and debt. Are we next?
Scholars believe that China is a strong contestant in the race for hegemony, has the time come to pass the torch to the Chinese? According to Lyndon H LaRouche, a US economist, “the robust US economy began to decline with the emergence of the Bush Administration in early 2001, and any recovery is unlikely due to mounting federal and current account deficits, growing inflation, rising unemployment, and a weak dollar.” Even with the $700 billion bank bailout plan investors don’t feel safe nor do they have faith in the government’s ability to cure our ailing economy. So with the people’s distrust and absolutely no guarantee of a recovery, is this the beginning of the end for the American empire?
